Driving a sustainable future through waste recycling and reuse

Construction and demolition waste contributes to a third of overall landfill waste.

We actively divert materials from meeting this end, working with clients and our supply chain to advise on more efficient ways of recovering value from these
so-called ‘waste’ materials.

General Demolition operates a 29 acre Waste Recycling Centre in Hersham, Surrey.

This facility helps us achieve the 100% recyclability rate we strive for on our projects. We firmly believe that when a commercial building meets the end of its life, or is to be reconfigured, parts of the structure that are viable for reuse should be salvaged.

Incorporating this work into our demolition and enabling works programmes helps to ensure that any materials that can be recycled or reused are dealt with effectively.

We are continuously working towards the circular economy we believe in.

Our average recycling rate is
98%
(95% at a minimum)

Crafting bespoke waste management plans with our clients allows us to assess the most sustainable way to recycle across each and every demolition and enabling works project we deliver.

The waste that arrives to our resource park from our sites across London and the Home Counties is processed by a dedicated on-site team. The facility also recycles arisings from local waste and construction companies and can accommodate upwards of 2000 tonnes per day.

To put this into perspective, that’s the equivalent of 160 London Buses!

TAKING SUSTAINABILITY SERIOUSLY

Environmental Consideration

“We would like to extend our sincere thanks and gratitude for your generous donation towards our charity of kitchens, cabinets, office furniture and various fixtures and fittings. Your donation will have a significant impact on helping us to fulfil our mandate of reaching out to those who need support in the local community and beyond.”

Pastor Charles - Citizenship in Christ Fellowship

“It’s great to be part of a company that puts real consideration into its environmental practices. I am continually amazed by how efficiently the team separates waste streams that arrive to the resource park and by how quickly the wider team is at reallocating it, whether on construction sites or within the local communities.”

Enabling the future of Sustainability

Arisings are sorted and crushed to produce various blends of aggregates for re-use. Materials that are recycled include:

crushed concrete (6F1 & 6F2)

Once processed, these materials are redistributed and re-used, mainly within the construction industry.

TAKING SUSTAINABILITY SERIOUSLY

Recovering value from waste

But it’s not just the usual materials you’ll find at our resource park. Delicate brick reclamation and architectural salvage also have a place, helping us to ensure maximum re-use from across our sites.

We have invested in second-hand re-use storage facilities at Hersham (with another outpost at Wandsworth). From here, companies and individuals can obtain materials and objects salvaged from sites. We are extremely proud of the work that has gone into developing these facilities.

They provide further opportunities for recovering value from ‘waste’ materials should they need to be removed from site. Salvaged items have included carpet tiles and kitchenettes, suitcases and sofas.
